The price is right!
Driving past the Jumbo Buffet, I noticed that their sign still had the low promotional price posted for the public to see, just like on their opening day last year. I had intentions of dining downtown in Las Vegas at a local restaurant, but then the thought occurred to me that it was the holiday season and money was fast becoming tight. One plate of food at a local restaurant started to seem like it was not much of a bargain, especially since I was very hungry. Then a bell went off in my head that has not gone off in quite some time. When hungry and low on cash in Las Vegas, do a bargain price buffet! The Jumbo Buffet offers an all you can eat asian and Chinese food buffet for a bargain price of about $6.00 all day! Lunch or dinner is the same low price at the Jumbo Buffet. That is a good deal for those who are suffering through the current bad economic times and for those who hit bottom during the holiday season. Drinks are not included in the buffet price, but for a little bit more than $1.00, a drink other than water can be had and the drink price includes endless refills. For just over $7.00, a person will not be hungry or thirsty after dining at the Jumbo Buffet. While dining at the Jumbo Buffet, I noticed that the dining room was filled with large families of every ethnic origin. A large family can get plenty of eats for a good price at this buffet. There were plenty of couples that dressed modestly and they looked like hungry hard working people that lived on a limited budget. They ate plate after plate of food, like they had not eaten a big meal in weeks. That is what a bargain price buffet is all about! Stuffing the belly full of food for cheap and being satisfied! When I first moved to Las Vegas, making $30 a day was par for the course for a newcomer, till a better paying job could be found. After paying rent and bills, a few dollars were leftover. I used to be a sharp cheap bargain price buffet hunter back in those days! A dining venture at cheap buffet meant getting so stuffed full of food, that hunger did not return for nearly two days. I actually planned my week around bargain price buffet gorging days. I never went hungry and I was always looking healthy. Eating food that is good for you is the first thing that a health conscious person does, before pigging out on all the good stuff! As you can see in the photographs above, the food at the Jumbo Buffet looks pretty good. Sure, a customer has to peel their own shrimp and the vegetables might be a little bit overcooked, but that is nothing to complain about, especially after considering the price. Secondary cuts of meat were featured throughout the buffet, like Filipino style pork hocks, chicken legs, chicken backs, boneless chicken thigh meat, catfish and pork shoulder blade sections. Those cuts of meat are normally eaten by most working class people. I often feature recipes for those secondary cuts of meat. I enjoy cooking traditional ethnic recipes that feature items like pork hocks, catfish, turkey necks and chicken legs. Heck! Two of my all time most popular recipes are for smoked pork neck bones and ham hock! I honestly have to laugh, because many of the new wave of adventurous upper class dining customers pay top dollar for an overrated chef on the Las Vegas Strip to prepare pork belly, pork hocks or hog jowls for their dinner. Those same people would be embarrassed to admit that they dined anywhere for a price of about $6.00, even though they would miss out on the fine dining experience of chowing down on "all you can eat" Filipino style pork hocks! I guess that some people have to maintain an expensive self image, so they miss out on the real bargains in the game of life. Overall, the food was pretty good at the Jumbo Buffet. It was not filet mignon and lobster tail, but that can be expected when the dinner tab is such a low price. The waitstaff was fast, efficient and polite. The service was good and the dining room was clean. The Jumbo Buffet is located at 1617 South Decatur Boulevard near Charleston or Oakey. A few locals casinos are in this area and it is a working class neighborhood. The Jumbo Buffet picked a good location that has the demographics that spell success. I recommend the Jumbo Buffet for local residents and visitors of Las Vegas that seek bargain priced good hearty food! When times are tough, the bargain price buffets are the busiest restaurants in Las Vegas. Yum! ... Shawna
