A hip cool place for sushi in Las Vegas!
Sushi Kaya is not your average stuffy formal Japanese style sushi restaurant.  Sushi Kaya is modern and hip!  Sushi Kaya is not anally retentive!  This place is fun!     Doing a restaurant review at one of the Las Vegas all you can eat sushi restaurants in Chinatown has been on my list of things to do for quite some time.  There are so many great restaurants in Las Vegas, that it becomes distracting.  Many times I have set out from my home to go to a chosen restaurant destination to sample the food and I have ended up getting interested in a different restaurant along the way.  Today, I firmly put the blinders on and set my destination on Chinatown, with all you can eat sushi as my goal.       As I drove down Spring Mountain in Chinatown, I spotted the sign for Sushi Kaya.  A bell went off in my brain for some reason.  I vaguely recalled reading about Sushi Kaya some time ago.  Las Vegas food writers liked this place and they described the atmosphere as being fun rather than very formal.  A fun hip sushi restaurant review was an item that had not been posted in my food blog so far.  I have done sushi restaurant reviews about very high end classy sushi restaurants and quiet classic sushi restaurants in the past.  To tell you the truth, formal and quiet sushi joints are not really my bag.  A sushi restaurant that offers a fun lively atmosphere is more like my style!       When I entered Sushi Kaya, the big sushi chef boomed a greeting of irasshai across the room to me.  I was taken by surprise!  I have not heard the traditional loud irasshai greeting at a sushi bar in a very long time and I liked it!       I was greeted by a hostess and I chose to sit at the sushi bar.  During the walk to the sushi bar, I was taking all the sights and sounds in.  The decor was classically hip!  The music put a smile on my face!  Japanese and Korean pop music with that asian twangy electric guitar sound was playing and the sushi chefs were singing along!  I grew up as a kid in Los Angeles and us kids thought the Japanese bands in the movies had the coolest sound to imitate.  Sushi Kaya's atmosphere was already bringing the kid out in me.  I was smiling and having fun and I had not even seen the menu or had a drink as of yet.  I instantly took a liking to Sushi Kaya!       Everybody that worked in Sushi Kaya smiled and they all had a good sense of humor.  The head sushi chef and I had a very nice conversation.  As it turned out, the sushi chef was interested in attending the pastry chef classes at Cordon Bleu.  I said that is a good choice and added that my own sushi making skills have been improving, yet I still am learning.  We got into a cool culinary topic discussion and we genuinely were having a good time.  That is entertainment at its best, when a sushi chef turns out to be a great conversationalist.  I was eager to try some of the interesting fun sushi that the sushi crew was going to prepare after that conversation.     The sign said "All You Can Eat SUSHI"!  That is why I was at Sushi Kaya!  I did not want to eat the standard traditional Japanese sushi after getting a taste of the lively atmosphere at Sushi Kaya.  I did not want to be bored with tradition.  I wanted to try exciting new sushi creations!     The Sushi Kaya menu is loaded with creative sushi cuisine, traditional sushi cuisine and Japanese grill cuisine.  There are noodle entrees on the menu too.       The names of the house specialty sushi creations were very hip and fun!  If fact, I had a blast just by reading the list of specialty rolls.  I decided to order a nice selection of house specialty sushi creations that had names that would be entertaining for the readers of this blog.  This is Las Vegas and the wilder the sushi roll name, the more I liked the sound of it.     I started with a James Bond 007 roll.  This roll was a California roll with shrimp and avocado on top.  The roll was nicely presented.  This roll would definitely appeal to sushi bar newcomers.  California style sushi rolls are very tame by standards.     My second course was the Ginger Salad.  I happen to like the flavor of ginger and this salad satisfied my craving in a big way.  The ginger flavor of the dressing was very well balanced.  I really liked the refreshing ginger salad!     My third course was the Sex Bomb!  The Sex Bomb blew me away!  This was a great creative sushi roll.  There was soft texture and crunchy textures.  Savory flavors and piquant flavors.  Color contrasts and artistic design.  This roll had an explosive sexy flavor!  The Sex Bomb was the bomb!     My next course was when my dining experience at Sushi Kaya really became fun.  The waitresses that passed by me to the dining area always stopped to say hello and make fun conversation.  They also wanted to see if the food was to my satisfaction and the waitresses were very entertaining.  I can be quick at saying funny things, so my dining experience felt like I was at a fun sushi party.     I saw a menu item that was sure to capture some attention.  I ordered the Monkey Brain for my next course!  The Monkey Brain creation was not made with monkey brains.  The name of this sushi entree actually referred to the shape and texture of the entree.  There was no rice in this sushi specialty.  The Monkey Brain was actually a very luxurious tasting plate of crab puffs that were presented like four little monkey brains.  The flavor and texture was very nice!     A passing waitress noticed the Monkey Brain sushi sitting at my spot and she came over to take a close look.  After looking closely at the Monkey Brain sushi, she said "Monkey Brain!  Ah!  That looks just like monkey brains!  Doesn't that look just like monkey brains?"  I answered by saying "You know what monkey brains look like?"  The waitress said "Yes!  Uh huh!"  I actually said to her " I'm in love!"  Ha! Ha! Ha!  I thought that the sushi chef that was listening to us was gonna die from laughter!       I was really having a fun time!  By all means, order the Monkey Brain specialty when dining at Sushi Kaya!  It tasted great and it makes for some fun conversation!     I like beef tongue and as I found out, so did the waitress.  We actually had a fun conversation about beef tongue!  Beef tongue is not your typical topic for a dinner conversation, but this was Sushi Kaya.  There were several grilled skewer items on the menu.  I have never had a Japanese style beef tongue skewer prepared for me, so I gave it a try.  The tongue meat was beyond tender and full of flavor.  Keeping beef tongue tender is tricky to do, because the meat is very lean.  This was a very nice skewer and I suggest it as a must try for tongue lovers!     My next order was for a Crazy Orgasm.  The funny waitress took my order and she started giggling and trying not to laugh out loud when I said that I wanted a Crazy Orgasm!  I said to the giggling waitress "This is the most popular sushi roll in the house and you have served this many times.  Why are you laughing?"  The giggling waitress said "Because....  Because, it is still funny!" and she was still trying to keep from laughing.  We both started laughing!       I was having a blast!  This sushi bar was really hip and fun!  Finally I stopped laughing and tasted the spicy Crazy Orgasm.  This roll was dynamite with jalapenos on top!  If you like spicy sushi rolls, the Crazy Orgasm is a must try!       After the Crazy Orgasm, I wanted something cool sweet and refreshing.  Doesn't everyone!  After an evening of indulging on creative sushi, ice cream sure sounded good.  Cherry Amaretto Ice Cream sounded really good!  I have not had that flavor in a long time and I thoroughly enjoyed the ice cream.     Sushi Kaya is located in Chinatown, Las Vegas at 4355 Spring Mountain Road between Arville and Wynn.  It is in a two story plaza building and the sign is easy to see.  Sushi Kaya also has a fun Karaoke Club on the second floor and it is very popular too.       I had a great time at Sushi Kaya and the tasty creative sushi rolls were expertly crafted.  The sushi chefs were A-1!  The waitstaff was very fun and the atmosphere was lively.  Sushi Kaya is now my number one favorite sushi bar in Las Vegas!  I was very happy to find this great restaurant.     I highly recommend Sushi Kaya for visitors of Las Vegas and locals alike!  If you are looking for a modern hip fun sushi restaurant, then join in on the party.  This is Las Vegas sushi as it should be.  Fun and exciting!       Yum!  ...  Shawna
