Dude!  Surfs up!  Go Hawaiian!
Las Vegas is one of the most popular Hawaiian tourist destinations.  Many Hawaiians refer to Las Vegas as being the ninth island.  Since so many Hawaiians fly to Las Vegas, there are many casino resorts and restaurants that cater to Hawaiians.  Many Hawaiians end up moving to Las Vegas and there is a large population of both Hawaiians and Filipino Hawaiians in the Las Vegas Valley.  Where there are Island folk, there is island food!     I was running errands the other day and I decided to get some to-go food instead of cooking dinner. First I pulled into a pizza joint that I wanted to try, then the thought occurred to me that a whole pizza might be too much food.  I recently made a few sub sandwiches with Italian deli cold cuts, so I was not eager to do another sub.     I backed out of the parking place at the pizza joint and travelled another block down the road.  I noticed a bunch of cars parked at the end of a plaza that had two restaurant tenants.  I pulled into the lot and noticed that one of the restaurants was an awful middle of the road low quality sub shop.  The restaurant next door was Hawaiian!  I said to myself, "All these cars cannot possibly be parked here, just for people going to get lousy quality sub sandwiches.  There is no way!"  I then noticed a steady stream of people picking to-go food up at the Hawaiian restaurant.  That is good sign from the Hawaiian gods!     I got out of my car and the people in the car next to me looked like some kind of hip hop club gangster wannabes.  I figured that they were the type that would settle for lousy chain restaurant subs and I was right.  They were looking at me from the sub shop door and I kind of gave them that look of "You are not cool, unless you eat Hawaiian food, man!"  I actually started to get my Hawaiian attitude on before I even stepped into the Aloha Hawaiian BBQ!       I do have some Hawaiian attitude that I learned from some good Hawaiian taxi driver friends, from back in the days when I drove a cab in Las Vegas.  According to the Hawaiian taxi drivers, the only good food in Las Vegas is Hawaiian and Filipino food.  Every time that I mentioned dining at a casino buffet, Chinese restaurant or a breakfast shop, the Hawaiian cab driver friends would disappointedly say "Oh man!  You ate there?  Oh man!  You should have gone to the Hawaiian restaurant down the street.  The food is a lot better!"  There is nothing like an impartial jury of your peers!     The Aloha Hawaiian BBQ turned out to be a nice choice.  I am sure that my Hawaiian taxi driver friends would agree!  The dining room is small simple and clean, but on the evening that I visited the Aloha Hawaiian BBQ, not one person was dining at a table.  The dining room looked like a waiting room at a maternity ward!  There was a bunch of customers who were waiting for to-go food and the customers either sat at a table patiently or they were pacing the floor with eager anticipation.  I have never seen a restaurant that did more to-go business, than dining room business in Las Vegas.  Maybe it is just the neighborhood that I live in.  I do not know!       The Aloha Hawaiian BBQ also delivers!  The delivery guy was very busy with organizing his next round of food deliveries while I was there.  I must say that the Aloha Hawaiian BBQ really had it going on!  Whoever opened this restaurant correctly assessed the local clientele demographics and they came up with a winning business plan strategy.  Hawaiian to-go and delivery food was the smart choice for this neighborhood.       This restaurant is making money doing something that is nearly unheard of.  Hawaiian food to-go and Hawaiian food delivery is not a common restaurant theme, but it works.  The reason why should be obvious.  Hawaiian food is big portion high quality food that appeals to nearly everybody.  I have never heard of a Hawaiian who would settle for an overpriced tiny portion of overrated modern trendy food.  For the most part, Hawaiians live big and eat big.  A meal from a Hawaiian restaurant is guaranteed to fill a belly up!     The Aloha Hawaiian BBQ has a full menu of traditional Hawaiian food.  Hawaiian style BBQ beef, pork and chicken is featured.  Traditional kalua pork is on the menu.  There are many seafood entrees on the menu and traditional mahimahi is featured.  Several kinds of musubi, including spam musubi are on the board.  Basically, if it is Hawaiian, the Aloha Hawaiian BBQ has it on the menu.      I ordered a mini portion of chicken katsu.  The mini portion of chicken katsu came with a traditional Hawaiian style dipping sauce, a choice of rice and macaroni salad.  Hawaiians are big on macaroni salad!  Speaking of big, as you can see in the pictures above, the mini portion of chicken katsu was huge!  Go with it, man!  Especially when the price is right.  It took me an hour to eat what the Hawaiians call a mini portion!  I was stuffed!     The chicken katsu was well prepared and it tasted great!  I also ordered a Portuguese Sausage Musubi.  Portuguese cooking is a major influence in Hawaiian cuisine.  I usually order spam musubi, because spam tastes pretty good when it is prepared as a sushi roll.  The Portuguese Sausage Musubi was equally as good.  This style of musubi was well seasoned and it had a nice flavor.       I really liked the food at the Aloha Hawaiian BBQ!  The Hawaiian food was fresh and good tasting.  The portions were big and the prices were reasonable.  The service at the counter was friendly, polite and cheerful.  This Hawaiian restaurant is doing everything right and they sure seem to have a lock on the local neighborhood to-go and delivery food business.       The Aloha Hawaiian BBQ is located at 4990 West Craig Road near the intersection of Decatur.  This location is a short distance from Rancho and Highway 95 in the north end of Las Vegas.      I highly recommend the Aloha Hawaiian BBQ for local residents and visitors of the north side of Las Vegas!  If you are from out of town or just the other side of town, stop by this restaurant when passing by.  You will not be disappointed!  The Hawaiian food tastes great, the portions are huge and the price is right.  Yum!  ...  Shawna
